# Moderation log

Edited and deleted messages, posted to a staff channel.

When someone edits or deletes a message in your server, the bot posts what changed to a channel you choose.

It is **off by default**, and it stays off until you turn it on in the [feature flags](/acoservice-documentation/setting-up-your-tenant/feature-flags.md). Logging what your members write is not something to switch on for somebody.

## Turning it on

Enable **Discord Mod Log** for your tenant, then:

```
/support modlog #mod-log
```

Pick a channel only staff can read.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Tell your members you are logging.** Most jurisdictions require it, Discord's own terms expect it, and a community that finds out by accident reacts the way you would expect. A line in your rules channel is enough.
{% endhint %}

## What gets logged

| Event | What the entry shows |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Message edited** | Author, channel, a jump link, the text before and after |
| **Message deleted** | Author, channel, when it was sent, the text, attachment filenames |
| **Bulk delete** (a purge) | One entry per message |

Not logged: bot messages, and anything in the log channel itself.

## Two limits worth knowing

**Only messages sent since the bot last started.** The log reads from the bot's memory, not from a database. An edit to a message from last week shows the metadata and says the original was *not captured*.

This is deliberate. One platform database serves every ACO, and storing message bodies would mean this platform holding your members' private conversations indefinitely, for a feature whose job is to show you what changed a moment ago.

**Attachments are named, not kept.** A deleted message's entry lists the filenames. The files themselves are gone from Discord's servers, and this platform does not copy your members' uploads.

If you need durable retention beyond that, a dedicated logging bot with its own storage is the honest answer.

## Turning it off

Disable the feature flag. The logging stops immediately — you do not also have to clear the channel, and the setting is remembered if you turn it back on.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://acoservice.gitbook.io/acoservice-documentation/discord-integration/mod-log.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
